The 20 Best Ways to Learn Spanish as an Adult

Were you aware that adults often pick up new languages more effectively than children? So, if you were concerned that learning Spanish might be more difficult as you get older, let me assure you that it's never too late to learn a new language.

But what is the most effective method for an adult to learn Spanish? This article covers 20 practical tips for learning Spanish, specifically tailored for adults. You possess more advantages than you might realize.

1. Set personal learning goals

Now that you've chosen to learn Spanish, begin by organizing your studies. Create a list of minor objectives you wish to achieve and a major, overarching goal that will be your final target. Assign a specific timeframe to each of your smaller goals and strive to complete them sequentially.

The most effective approach is to persist and not overlook any of your objectives! Proceed step by step and avoid moving to your next goal until you have successfully completed the prior one.

Regardless of how you break down your tasks, consistently remember them and revisit your list periodically to ensure you stay on course toward your destination.

2. Make learning Spanish a habit

I understand this is often easier said than done, but the more you approach your Spanish studies as a scheduled activity for specific times on specific days, the more it will become embedded in your mind and the quicker it will develop into a positive habit.

When I am learning a new language (which is nearly every day of my life) I devote a minimum of 30 minutes to it daily after work. Over time, this has transitioned from a mandatory task to a rewarding routine that helps me decompress and relax before sleep.

3. Track your progress and review, review, review!

Periodically—for instance, once a week—you should reflect to monitor and evaluate your progress. If you believe you allocated insufficient time for certain goals, revise your plan and continue to update and adjust it according to your present circumstances.

Adjustments do not indicate failure. We are adults with busy lives!

Allow yourself at least a few days between minor goals to go over what you have learned up to that point. Reviewing is just as crucial as the initial learning process. During review, you can identify what you have truly mastered and which areas require additional effort.

4. Label your house, literally!

Take some sticky notes and write the names of furniture, household objects, electronic gadgets, etc., on them, in both English and Spanish (or solely in Spanish). Then, attach them to the corresponding items so you see their Spanish name every time you glance at them or use them!

Are you brushing your teeth? Then you should be looking at yourself in the espejo (mirror). Heating a meal in the microondas (microwave)? The sticky note certainly indicates that! Perhaps you are getting something from the refrigerator? Each time you approach it, you will notice it is called frigorífico or nevera in Spanish!

It truly is as simple as it seems. Furthermore, viewing the Spanish words every single day will assist you in memorizing them with virtually no exertion.

5. Use programs to immerse yourself

One of the most effective methods for learning a language is through immersion. And there are numerous ways to envelop yourself in Spanish, even if you are studying from your own home.

This post includes several suggestions for immersion. However, if you want to go further, utilizing an online program for immersion is the subsequent step.

Let’s examine a few different programs you can use for immersion:

  • Language Zen: This program offers students the choice of immersing themselves and learning through music, or by following a more conventional study path. Courses are offered for various skill levels, and you can select courses on fundamental topics or more specialized ones.
  • LingQ: This program enables you to utilize authentic reading materials and select videos to learn from real Spanish texts. Each word is highlighted until you learn it or designate it as known, allowing you to progress toward comprehending the text one word at a time.
  • Lingflix: For learning with authentic Spanish video content, you could try Lingflix. Lingflix takes real videos—such as music videos, movie trailers, news, and inspiring talks—and converts them into personalized language learning lessons. You can try Lingflix for free for 2 weeks. 6. Go one topic at a time

A simple method to begin expanding your vocabulary is by learning words grouped by themes. Start by studying numbers, colors, common weather expressions, animals, etc. The choice is yours!

Select a topic and concentrate on it. Learn everything possible about it: the basic vocabulary, common expressions, the related grammar, the pronunciation of each word, and so forth. Do not proceed to the next topic until you have fully grasped the current one and understand all the words you have selected.

You can employ flashcards or create your own vocabulary lists to aid your studies.

7. Turn your hobby into your biggest strength

This is somewhat connected to the previous technique because you will be concentrating on one topic at a time. First, compile a list of all your hobbies.

Use this knowledge to your benefit and search for vocabulary lists or books related to that subject. In Spanish, naturally!

Strive to learn as much as possible about that topic you are so passionate about. Studying something we care deeply about is not only simpler but can also be highly practical!

8. Memorize and repeat phrases, sentences and expressions

Some of my students prefer to adopt what I call The Parrot Method. They compile a list of the words and expressions they want to learn and attempt to listen to them and repeat them aloud as frequently as possible.

Repetition is an excellent technique for those who might have a slight aversion to grammar rules and favor a more experiential approach to language acquisition.

If you enjoy perfecting sentences by repeating them repeatedly until you sound like a genuine native speaker, this is an excellent starting point. Moreover, this method pairs very well with the next one…

9. Talk to yourself in the mirror

No, I am not insane. I do it myself and it produces excellent results.

Speaking to yourself in the mirror and repeating Spanish words and expressions you have been practicing is a fantastic way to observe how your mouth, tongue, and teeth move when you speak.

You can compare your mouth movements with those of native speakers and identify areas for improvement. You can even pretend you are conversing with another person and practice casual conversations! Once you overcome the initial awkwardness, you will be able to productively practice your Spanish in front of the mirror.

10. Make YouTube your best friend

That is precisely what I do! But YouTube can be utilized for much more than just talking to yourself in the mirror. You have access to literally millions of videos that can teach you Spanish from the beginning. You can search for specific grammar topics you are studying, vocabulary lists, reading and listening exercises… You can find everything there.

Lingflix has a Spanish YouTube channel where you can find plenty of native, authentic content combined with explanations from Spanish teachers. For example, this video takes a Spanish dubbed episode of “Friends” and transforms it into a detailed lesson on the vocabulary, grammar patterns, cultural explanations, and expressions used.

If cartoons are more to your liking, there are also videos that use SpongeBob episodes:

There are also numerous Spanish YouTubers available, so go exploring and find a few that you genuinely like. Then, immerse yourself in their content.

11. Download language learning apps

Learning with the assistance of phone applications is becoming increasingly common.

There are apps for every type of student, from young children to adults like us. Consider what you want to practice using apps and download the ones you find most enjoyable.

There are literally thousands of apps waiting for you just a tap away!

12. Use the proper grammar books

Not all grammar books are identical, just as no two students are the same.

As with phone apps, there are thousands of grammar books available to delve into some substantial, traditional grammar, but you need to select the one that suits you best. Whether it is a book filled with explanations and examples or a workbook to get your pencil and mind active, examine different grammar resources before making a choice.

Try to steer clear of all those miraculous "fluent in two days" books, however. If you truly want to learn Spanish beyond hola (hello) and buenos días (good morning), you are better off finding a solid grammar book.

13. Play games in Spanish

Everyone has a favorite board game, me included! Try to obtain the Spanish versions of your preferred games. They will be a great resource and will allow you to have fun while learning!

I personally purchase "Scrabble" for every language I learn. Other games I really like are "Trivial Pursuit" and "¿Quién es quién?" ("Guess who?"). Remember, you are only permitted to speak in Spanish while playing, so bring your grammar guide and dictionary along!

These methods are not as easy to implement simply because they are quite advanced or they demand a bit more money than the previous ones.

14. Practice your listening skills with podcasts

If you are an absolute beginner, listening to podcasts from the start might be somewhat challenging. But if you have already covered some grammar and vocabulary and you select appropriate ones, podcasts can be an excellent way to practice your listening comprehension and enhance your pronunciation.

Always choose podcasts presented by native speakers and start listening to them whenever you have the opportunity.

15. Read bilingual books

Bilingual books have always been popular, but they are proliferating recently. There are bilingual books for every type of reader, covering every topic and at almost any level. Simply select the right ones for you and begin your journey.

Reading bilingual books might not be suitable for everyone, though.

It is true that you will see the translation immediately, but the more knowledge you acquire about the target language, the more beneficial bilingual books will become. This is because you will not only be adding vocabulary to your repertoire but you will also be able to recognize grammar rules and patterns and learn how to apply them effectively!

16. Buy language courses

There are countless language courses you can purchase, install on your computer, and begin using instantly. Most are segmented by level and sold separately, which can make them somewhat more expensive. Others are comprehensive and include all the resources you will ever need to progress from knowing nothing to being conversational.

Out of the vast number of courses available, Rosetta Stone, the Michel Thomas method, Babbel, and several other outstanding programs are certainly worth trying.

17. Attend a language course

Enrolling in a group language course is more budget-friendly than hiring a private tutor to come to your home or teach you via Skype.

The last three methods can be costly, challenging, and even seem rather extreme, but they are the most efficient if you want to learn very rapidly.

18. Talk to native speakers

Speaking, chatting, and writing to native speakers provides you with the best and most immediate feedback you could ever receive. If you are a shy individual, this might seem like pushing the boundaries, but I can assure you that it is effective!

You will undoubtedly make errors and you might even experience some awkward moments when you say something inappropriate, but this real-world practice is invaluable. Ask your native-speaking friends to correct your mistakes as you speak or write. Take notes and apply their feedback to future conversations.

19. Get a private tutor

It can be pricey, I know. But it's effective! If you truly want to make a sound investment, hiring a native Spanish speaker is the optimal route. But be cautious! Not all native speakers are skilled teachers. Ensure your tutor has teaching experience and possesses the necessary qualifications.

20. Actually go abroad and get immersed in the language

This final method is only for the courageous and for those who have the means and time to spend several months in another country. If you are one of the fortunate ones, do not hesitate to pack your luggage and travel to a Spanish-speaking nation.

Living immersed in the culture and having constant access to the language is unquestionably the best way to learn it. You will be able to hear native speakers talk all day long about countless different subjects.

Why Learn Spanish as an Adult?

For all those readers who are still hesitating and pondering whether they should embark on this new journey or not, I have compiled a list of the primary benefits of learning Spanish as an adult.

There could be hundreds of advantages to learning Spanish as an adult, but based on my personal experience, the following are the four most significant ones:

Freedom of choice

Learning a new language as adults grants us the ability to decide what, when, where, and how we want to learn. The liberty we have to select the method, the timing, and all other aspects of our studies is something children do not possess.

Take full advantage of that!

Managing your own path

Do you want to learn Spanish for business purposes? Perhaps you would prefer to start with vocabulary lists? Or do you desire an intensive course with a private instructor?

Whatever you wish to do, you are the sole decision-maker and the one who charts the course of your learning. Choose what works for you, accommodate your schedule, and avoid wasting any time with a learning method that proves ineffective.

Knowing what you want and need

You are sufficiently mature to understand why you want to learn this new language. You know what you expect from your classes or courses and you can say "Next!" if things do not proceed as intended.

Not wasting your time and money

To extend from the previous benefit: You are old enough to determine whether you are willing to pay for language instruction or not. You can decide if purchasing the premium version of an app is worthwhile, if you want to invest a few hundred dollars in a comprehensive learning plan, or if you would rather use completely free resources.
