MyLanguageExchange Review: An Excellent Penpal Resource, Though the Website Feels Dated

MyLanguageExchange is a classic platform for locating someone to practice your new language with. The service assists you in finding a language partner and conducting a useful exchange.

While joining is free, the database only becomes truly functional if you upgrade to the Gold membership. This unlocks access to thousands of potential language partners for conversation.

What Is MyLanguageExchange?

MyLanguageExchange presents itself as the largest global community for language exchange, boasting more than three million members. Established in 2000, it's also one of the earliest platforms—a fact that is quite obvious from its early-200s website design and the notable mention of being "as seen in Yahoo! Internet Life magazine, January 2001."

The program is a rich database of eager language learners for almost any language you can think of. Exchanges are supported by a well-regarded language exchange technique (more on this later), a robust search function, and useful features designed to make your exchange sessions successful.

The website's objective is to link language learners and instruct them on how to conduct an exchange that is advantageous for all participants. Therefore, they provide a how-to guide, ideas for exchange sessions, and other resources you can utilize.

How to Find a Language Exchange Partner on MyLanguageExchange

The member search function allows you to seek a partner by their native language and the language they are studying. You can also filter results by age, gender, city, country, and other criteria. If you have a preference for a specific contact method, you can search for partners interested in text, email, voice, or in-person exchanges.

You can even organize the results by the last login date, simplifying the process of finding someone who has been active on the site recently.

I performed several searches for a Japanese speaker wanting to learn English and found nearly 12,000 pages of results. Limiting the search to people living in NYC still produced three pages of options for an in-person exchange. I also successfully found Japanese speakers in the area I plan to visit on an upcoming trip to Japan.

However, all these useful features are inaccessible without a Gold membership. The only interaction available to free members is sending a limited number of "Hi!" messages.

You have a daily allowance of 40 free "Hi!" messages to indicate your interest in starting a conversation. Only Gold members can initiate conversations with other users. But if a Gold member contacts you, you are permitted to reply.

There is no indicator on a user's profile showing if they are a Gold member. So as a free user, your options are limited to sending out greetings and hoping for a response—or waiting for a Gold member to contact you first.

The positive aspect is that you likely won't have to wait very long. While I was logged in to collect screenshots for this review, three people contacted me.

MyLanguageExchange Features and How to Have a Successful Session

Their proven method of language exchange

MyLanguageExchange doesn't simply drop you into language exchange without guidance. They offer a how-to guide for successful language exchange using the Cormier method, created by the website's founders, Helene Cormier and Dan Yuen.

The guide walks you through maximizing your session for the benefit of all participants, including information on preparation, what to do during the exchange, and how to review afterward.

While my personal experiences have been with one-on-one interactions, MyLanguageExchange actually suggests having groups of two to four people in each session.

Built-in text and voice chat

The website offers built-in text and voice chat (the latter is exclusively for Gold members). Although many users prefer to move their conversations off the platform, these integrated tools can be quite helpful.

The text chat includes a "Chat Companion," which provides lesson plans made for language exchange, a timer to signal when to switch languages, a multi-language dictionary, and a notepad. There's also a function to add accent marks, useful for Latin-based alphabets but not for languages using different writing systems.

Based on my experience, the number of lesson plans seems limited. It appears these plans, activities, and questions are intended to get you started and inspire you to continue based on your and your partner's specific needs.

Language-learning enhanced voice chat

The voice chat also includes a translation feature for over 130 languages. Instead of a live phone call, the voice chat operates more like exchanging voice messages. This reduces the pressure of real-time conversation, allowing you to formulate your responses more carefully.

That said, if you decide to conduct your exchange off the website, you are responsible for your own tools. Using the built-in features is a choice for you and your partner, but it's good to know they are available.

Language games and user-created lessons

Beyond browsing profiles, sending hopeful "Hi!" messages, and using the chat features, MyLanguageExchange includes a few other elements. These are secondary to the main site functions but are worth noting for added variety.

There are a few word games like Hangman and Word Match, created by other users (you can also create your own).

You can also find various user-created lessons. These are typically short and direct. Users can rate the lessons, but the quality and quantity available differ significantly for each language.

There is the "Club Library," where you can find public notes shared by other users.

Another notable feature is a listing of teachers and tutors for a more structured learning experience. Many of these are the teachers who created the lessons, so if you find a lesson you like, check the creator; you might be able to schedule a lesson with them.

There's also a bulletin board, which functions like a traditional internet forum. While it seemed popular in the site's earlier days, I couldn't find any language-specific board with activity from the past week.

Is It Safe to Talk to People on MyLanguageExchange?

Generally, MyLanguageExchange appears to be populated by individuals genuinely interested in studying languages and connecting with native speakers.

However, any online interaction carries a potential risk of inappropriate behavior or harassment. I personally never had a negative experience on this platform, but during my research, I came across at least one instance of a user starting a chat to request "pics."

The website strictly enforces its purpose for language exchange only. Abuse and harassment are prohibited, as is any form of advertising or recruiting. The platform aims to be a safe environment for all its users.

While there doesn't seem to be a direct "report" button for users, you can easily block them. To report a disruptive user, you are advised to use the built-in contact form. I find this approach reasonable, as it prevents misuse of reporting for minor disagreements rather than serious issues.

How to Use MyLanguageExchange: My Journey Using It to Learn Japanese

We've looked at the features of MyLanguageExchange, but what is it like to use in practice? I've used the service several times over the years, always with positive outcomes.

When I first signed up, I sent out numerous "Hi!" messages as the website recommends. Surprisingly, this method was effective! Of course, many contacts didn't progress beyond the initial greeting, but a good number of people replied or started conversations themselves.

Some conversations didn't develop, fading after a few messages. It's unrealistic to expect to connect with every person you meet.

The conversations that did flourish were memorable and educational.

I chatted with a wonderful woman living in Tokyo who had just had her first baby. From her, I learned about Japanese cultural practices, such as birthing and naming customs, and we continued our conversation for about a year via LINE before eventually losing touch.

I also connected with an older gentleman from Osaka via email who enjoyed telling me about his bicycle travels across the country, visiting onsens and foot baths. He taught me that, contrary to my textbook lessons, it can sometimes be acceptable to refer to someone as "-chan" even if they are much older than you.

There were many other interactions, but the key insight was this: MyLanguageExchange is a community comprising language learners of all ages and from diverse backgrounds.

I found it particularly helpful to study independently and then apply what I learned in chats with my language partners. For example, whenever I acquired new vocabulary or grammar from other learning apps, I would use them in conversation and ask for correction. I also sought help when I encountered unfamiliar words in books I was reading.

In summary, MyLanguageExchange is most effective when combined with your standard learning programs and routines. It's an excellent method to reinforce your learning with real native speakers.

How Much Does MyLanguageExchange Cost?

MyLanguageExchange is free to use, but you are restricted to sending a limited number of "Hi" messages per day unless you purchase a Gold membership.

The Gold membership is priced at $5.99 for one month, $11.99 for three months, or $23.99 for one year.

Alternatives to MyLanguageExchange

HelloTalk

HelloTalk is a language exchange application similar to MyLanguageExchange, but it does not have a web version. You can connect with native speakers using the "Connect" feature, which lets you browse native speakers who are learning your native language.

There are numerous filters to help you find the right person—age range, gender, country or region, "Serious" learners (those who have been online very recently), and many more.

Pro members can also search for learners in their local area. I've used this feature and met one of my best friends in Lima, Peru. If you've allowed HelloTalk to access your location, this option will display users within a specified radius of you.

The app also includes many learning features. You can participate in live discussions with native speakers and other learners—these are typically led by a native speaker wanting to meet new people, and participants can join via audio or video call to contribute to the conversation.

You can also send audio messages, make video calls, and share images and gifts within the chat function. If you encounter an unknown word in a message, you can get an immediate translation.

Tandem

Tandem is an app very similar to HelloTalk. You can set filters to find your ideal language partner and there is an option to sort by region and city, allowing for local connections if desired.

It offers chat and video call options, along with a translation feature for messages you don't understand. To assist your language partner's improvement, you can correct their messages by clicking on them and rewriting them as a native speaker would. Tandem automatically highlights the changes you made.

Unlike HelloTalk, Tandem reviews each profile before allowing new members to join. This process can take up to seven days, but my profile was approved within two days when I used it.

Final Thoughts on MyLanguageExchange

The advantage of the large community on MyLanguageExchange is that if you don't connect well with one person, there are many other users who might better suit your learning style and objectives. My own partners offered diverse perspectives and language styles, and the interaction with native speakers was extremely valuable.

However, the platform has some significant drawbacks.

For example, some feel that requiring payment to chat with people undermines the community atmosphere. Additionally, the site is cluttered with some unnecessary or rarely used features, and while the built-in chatting tools exist, they aren't compelling enough to keep conversations on the platform.

Still, MyLanguageExchange understands that a native speaker isn't necessarily a good teacher. The provided guides, lessons, and gentle guidance make it a good starting point for beginners.

Don't be discouraged by the website's outdated appearance. MyLanguageExchange is a wonderful community of language learners seeking study partners. You might find your next language learning companion on MyLanguageExchange, or you might even find a lifelong friend.
