Complete Live Lingua Evaluation for 2024: Top-Tier Instructors Yet Platform Experience Falls Short

As a specialized language school established in 2008, Live Lingua carries a higher price tag than many similar services. Yet, this cost includes smaller class sizes and a dedicated advisor for every learner, leading me to question if the extra expense was justified.

My overall discovery was that the instructors are skilled and proficient, but available class times are restricted (notably for languages such as Japanese), and the platform's interface feels somewhat awkward.

The Main Characteristics of Live Lingua

Compact group grammar and conversation sessions

I found Live Lingua's group conversation and grammar sessions quite enjoyable. They are capped at six participants, but in my initial conversation class, which focused on market dialogues, it was only the teacher, another student, and myself, creating an intimate setting with ample opportunity for speaking and listening practice.

I gained significant knowledge in this first session, and I quickly identified my conversational strengths and the aspects I had forgotten after years of not using my Spanish.

It was also highly enjoyable. We shared laughs and the atmosphere was very amicable.

The grammar sessions were also effectively conducted, as you can select the specific grammar topic you wish to improve.

Individual video call lessons

The core of this program is pairing students with skilled, high-quality teachers. My sessions, which we conducted on Zoom since I already had it on my computer, were dynamic and enjoyable. I was speaking Spanish within moments.

My teacher sent me a PDF of a Spanish textbook via email, which he mentioned was his personal material and not supplied by Live Lingua. This gave our lessons a structured framework to follow.

Live Lingua also includes a "Classroom" feature, which is an integrated video calling tool. My teacher favored Skype or Zoom, so I didn't use it extensively, though I tested it for one session and it functioned adequately.

Upon initially registering for the Live Lingua program, you book an online video meeting with a student advisor. Initially, I was skeptical, viewing it as potentially unproductive, but it proved quite useful for discussing my language objectives and background.

My advisor provided some guidance and then suggested a teacher, with whom I had my first complimentary class the following day.

The Live Lingua website offers numerous free learning resources, though they are accessible to everyone. Being a paying student does not grant you additional materials. My advisor mentioned that they aim to provide resources so that some form of language learning material is available to all.

The teacher assigned to me was outstanding. I asked for a European Spanish (Castilian) teacher and was matched with a great individual from Seville, a region with a distinctive accent that I admire.

He was amiable and engaging, and he also emailed me a PDF of a Spanish textbook that I could access, providing a structure for our classes. Naturally, whenever I wanted to discuss other topics or concentrate on different skills, he readily accommodated, setting the textbook aside.

Live Lingua's website hosts a wide array of learning resources, and many teachers, including mine, offer their own supplementary materials, such as PDF textbooks and other files.

The Disadvantages of Live Lingua

It is costly

I don't entirely grasp why Live Lingua needs to be pricier than other programs. I hope the increased cost translates to better pay for the teachers, though I cannot confirm this.

They claim their specialized and individualized approach ensures more time and attention for each student at this higher price, but honestly, I didn't perceive it as significantly superior to other services like italki, which can be much less expensive.

The conversation and grammar classes, specifically, seemed somewhat overpriced at $77 per month, considering I could find a free language partner on an application like Tandem.

Awkward user experience

My initial impression of the website was not very positive. It appears somewhat dubious with its numerous generic stock images and is difficult to navigate. I also felt it was overly aggressive in promoting the program.

Even after signing in as a paying student, the website resembles a marketing site more than an educational platform.

If I were to suggest an improvement for Live Lingua, it would undoubtedly be their website. For a boutique service, the site should be both user-friendly and very elegant. Currently, it is not.

The site includes a built-in video calling feature, but I noticed most teachers prefer using Skype or Zoom, and frankly, I do as well, since they feel more reliable, with a lower chance of disconnections or other technical problems.

The program also requires you to finish a learning style questionnaire before starting, which took about 10 minutes and did not appear to influence my teacher assignment.

Using email for scheduling lessons is inefficient

From the moment I signed up to when I arranged my first class, I received at least six emails from Live Lingua. This felt both inefficient and somewhat invasive. My goal was to learn Spanish, not to spend time managing numerous, often repetitive, emails.

I would suggest they implement an online booking system similar to the one used by Baselang. There, you simply pick the teacher, select a time slot, and your session is scheduled. With Live Lingua, this process involves multiple email exchanges.

At one stage during my time with the program, I had eight or nine emails from Live Lingua in my inbox!

They typically assign your teacher

I truly wanted the chance to select my own teacher, but my advisor assigned one to me. You can switch if the match isn't good, of course, but generally, Live Lingua's boutique approach means they make these decisions for you.

If your schedule matches with a specific teacher, you can choose them, but since my available times were listed as "rest periods," I was told to inform them, and they would email me with a class time and a pre-selected teacher. To me, this somewhat negated the purpose of the section featuring teacher profiles, as my instructor was assigned, not chosen by me.

Live Lingua Compared to Other Language Learning Programs

Live Lingua vs. italki

italki is a clear competitor in this space. And italki can also be very budget-friendly, with some sessions available for as low as $4.

However, if you are committed to learning Spanish rapidly, I would still suggest choosing Live Lingua in this comparison. I simply felt that the Live Lingua teachers were more attentive to my personal advancement, whereas the italki tutors I've encountered are somewhat more general in their approach.

Live Lingua vs. Tandem

If you prefer a free option, Tandem could be a suitable choice for you. Tandem operates differently from Live Lingua or italki, where you pay for sessions with a professional language tutor.

Instead, it connects language partners—individuals who wish to learn each other's languages. So, no formal teachers are involved (unless you happen to connect with a language teacher as a partner). This has its benefits (it's free, conversations can be more natural) and drawbacks (since your partner isn't a teacher, they lack formal training in instruction).

Overall, my experiences with Tandem have been positive, but for quick, efficient learning, I would still recommend Live Lingua here. Ultimately, knowing a language does not equate to knowing how to teach it.

Live Lingua vs. Lingflix

Since a feature I missed while using Live Lingua was recorded video, I wanted to begin this comparison with Lingflix, which places video at the core of its program. Even though Lingflix does not provide online tutoring, I still find it offers a quite similar experience due to its video-centric approach.

I know many individuals who have told me they learned English by watching films and television. In fact, I've heard this so frequently that I am convinced of its effectiveness. So, I like to employ this method as well.

Lingflix suits me well because I am someone who enjoys watching television, movies, music videos, news, and vlogs on YouTube. Therefore, for me, it seems like a sustainable and enjoyable way to learn and review a language, and it has been very effective.

I often spend hours on Lingflix while remaining engaged, whereas an hour-long session on Live Lingua can sometimes feel tedious.

Overall, I believe Lingflix and Live Lingua would work well together, and the combined cost would still be reasonably affordable.

Live Lingua vs. Baselang

Baselang is another direct alternative, though remember that Baselang only instructs in Spanish. But if your goal is to learn Spanish quickly, I think it could be a superior option because they provide unlimited one-on-one Zoom sessions with qualified Spanish teachers from across Latin America.

This could turn out to be significantly less expensive than Live Lingua, and I've found the teachers to be just as good, if not better, plus you have the freedom to sample as many teachers as you like.

What Is the Cost of Live Lingua?

The Grammar and Conversation classes are $77 per month. Private one-on-one sessions start at $25 per hour.

The Final Assessment of Live Lingua

The Live Lingua instructors are superb, and I found the group conversation and grammar sessions enjoyable and beneficial, but for me, the cost is not warranted.

You can locate similar programs at a much lower price, and from my experience, the teachers on those other, less expensive platforms were just as competent as those on Live Lingua.

That being said, if you appreciate supporting a small language learning company based in the United States and you have the budget for a more personalized, boutique learning experience, then Live Lingua might be suitable for you.
