It's worth noting that the video lessons and podcasts have their limits. Some users, including myself, find that the podcasts can become repetitive over time, and advanced video lessons often still use English.

This can be distracting once you have a good grasp of Japanese, so if you seek a more immersive experience, you might need an alternative or supplement.

The Cons of JapanesePod101

Few Opportunities for Speaking

The standard JapanesePod101 program doesn't include a speaking component, though the Premium PLUS membership provides some limited speaking practice.

The Premium PLUS membership includes "My Teacher," which, whether it's a real tutor or an automated system, involves speaking exercises. Learners record themselves for an initial assessment and subsequent assignments.

I found this useful but limited, and I would have preferred confirmation that a native speaker was reviewing my recordings.

Writing Practice Is Almost Entirely Absent

While some of JapanesePod101's supplementary materials show how to write kana (like their popular YouTube videos), the program itself offers no real writing practice.

Ultimately, the best method for memorizing kana is regular writing practice. Incorrect stroke order can affect the appearance of your handwriting and lead to legibility issues that are hard to fix later.

Aside from those few kana videos, JapanesePod101 provides no stroke order guidance or opportunities to type in Japanese, so you'll need to find that practice elsewhere.

Grammar Coverage Is Mostly Basic

As noted earlier, JapanesePod101's grammar explanations are famously brief and not always fully helpful.

The short answer? It depends on your learning preferences.

If you prefer a structured approach, this program may not suit you. Conversely, the ability to learn at your own pace and in your preferred order is a significant advantage for those who dislike rigid schedules.

JapanesePod101 isn't a comprehensive solution for learning Japanese. It has notable weaknesses in detailed grammar explanations, writing, and typing practice. The frequent self-promotion is also a drawback.

However, the extensive vocabulary library, professional video and audio lessons, and powerful flashcard system make JapanesePod101 a valuable tool for Japanese learners.
