The promise from Innovative Language is certainly attention-grabbing: “Learn a language in the fastest, easiest, and most fun way.”

During my evaluation, I found the dialogue-based lessons useful for acquiring practical vocabulary, though it's not a complete solution on its own. For instance, it's more effective for developing listening skills than for learning grammar.

This review of Innovative Language will provide a thorough look at how the program functions and identify its best uses.

The Fundamentals of Innovative Language

If you're studying a foreign language, you may have come across a Pod101 series such as JapanesePod101, GermanPod101, or FrenchPod101.

All these courses are created by a single company, Innovative Language, which launched in 2005. It now provides courses in 34 languages, including widely spoken ones like French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Portuguese, and Chinese.

Innovative Language offers carefully selected content for learners at every stage. The main part of their lessons is an audio or video clip that you analyze.

There are nine levels in all, starting from introductory and absolute beginner up to advanced. Subscribers receive new language material (audio or video) each week.

In addition to their website, they provide a mobile application for iOS and Android.

I also appreciate their YouTube channels. For their top languages, they have numerous useful videos that allow you to sample their content before signing up.

Let's explore how Innovative Language operates in practice. With its extensive range of languages, how does it approach teaching over 30 different ones?

The core of Innovative Language is its audio and video lessons.

You can find lessons by proficiency level, then select a specific pathway or watch the videos in any sequence. The pathways are often organized by topic—for instance, covering verb conjugation or health-related terms—but each level also includes a primary pathway that includes the most crucial lessons.

With so many options, I find it helpful to sort the list by popularity to find series that other learners have recommended:

You have the option to download lessons for offline access. This lets you study at any time and in any place, without needing an internet connection.

Additional Learning Resources

Innovative Language also provides several vocabulary tools. Essentially, there are two kinds—pre-made ones and those you create yourself over time.

The word bank is a personal collection you build by adding words from lessons, while the vocabulary lists are ready-to-use decks you can start studying right away:

Teacher Support

If you enroll in the Premium Plus level of the course, you gain access to personalized language instruction.

An instructor can create a customized learning plan for you, assign weekly tasks, and track your improvement. You can also submit audio recordings of your speaking for feedback and ask questions.

What an Innovative Language Lesson Involves

The core learning takes place within the lessons. A typical lesson includes four standard sections: Dialogue, Vocabulary, Lesson Notes, and Lesson Transcripts, with comparable features available on both the website and mobile app.

Dialogue

Most lessons start with two podcast hosts who act as guides. They converse with each other, present a sample dialogue, and then break down the lesson. It felt like listening to energetic radio hosts during my morning drive!

One host might say, "Let's begin by listening to this conversation." Then a pre-recorded dialogue plays.

The dialogue can cover any topic. It might involve someone discussing their family, inquiring about another person's job, or arranging weekend plans.

For beginner lessons, the exchanges are typically shorter than eight lines.

The entire dialogue is then expanded upon, with the hosts sharing their personal stories related to the topic.

I find this part enjoyable because it contains cultural insights. Hosts often share personal anecdotes and observations about native customs and traditions. This is where you learn about the friendliness of Italian men or the warmth of Spanish-speaking communities.

Each language lesson thoroughly explores the dialogue. It includes pronunciation practice, vocabulary, key phrases, cultural points, and even some grammar. After each lesson, I was very familiar with the lines.

While hearing the dialogue, I would follow along with the transcript. The program lets you click on each line of the transcript to hear the audio. You can also record yourself saying the line to check your pronunciation.

Vocabulary List

Each dialogue includes a vocabulary list with the essential words and phrases.

Again, you can listen to a native speaker pronounce the word, record yourself, or even slow down the playback to focus on the pronunciation.

Each word is accompanied by at least one example sentence (some have more than ten!).

You can add words to a flashcard set or to your word bank, take a quiz, or view a slideshow to help memorize them. The quiz is a useful feature because it assisted me in learning the vocabulary:

When you join any of Innovative Language's programs, you immediately receive free, full access to all the premium content for that language course. This unlimited access continues for seven days, giving you ample opportunity to explore the program and test its features.

After seven days, your account automatically switches to the "free lifetime" tier, which has restricted access.

Innovative Language offers four subscription levels: free, basic, premium, and premium plus:

• The free membership only includes the first three lessons of each series.
• A Basic subscription provides full access to the lessons but does not include many vocabulary tools, such as the word bank and spaced repetition flashcards.

Advantages of Innovative Language

Of course, no language learning app or software is flawless! Let's examine what Innovative Language excels at and where it has difficulties in a classic "Pros and Cons" list, beginning with the Pros.

The creators of Innovative Language hold that language is most effectively acquired through meaningful communication. This is why they encourage you to speak the target language from the very first lesson and facilitate learning through authentic dialogues.

In fact, research has demonstrated that this method is more successful than traditional approaches. You cannot learn to speak a language just by reading about it!

And when Innovative Language introduces grammar, it is within the context of a conversation rather than in isolation.

Useful and Varied Lessons

This program provides practical examples that will be helpful when conversing with native speakers.

Innovative Language is one of the most productive content creators (just from their YouTube channels!). They deliver new lesson material every week, and learners can receive a free, continuous "Word of the Day" from Innovative Language.

Varied Repetition

Innovative Language believes that for lessons and concepts to be retained, you need to encounter the material multiple times. However, they recognize the need to present it in engaging ways to maintain student interest.

There are about half a dozen functions to assist students in remembering vocabulary in the target language, such as spaced repetition flashcards, a word bank, and word lists like the "100 Most Common Words" and "2,000 Most Common Words."

Lessons are delivered through different formats for greater effectiveness. You receive a powerful combination of videos, audio, and text. Because the material is presented repeatedly and from various perspectives, new vocabulary is more likely to stick.

Learning at Your Own Pace

The team at Innovative Language ensures that learners have almost total control over their learning journey.

You select your language, level, and topics. Learners can set their own speed and revisit, advance, rewind, or pause as necessary.

Each pathway contains lessons related to specific topics, such as eating out, shopping, travel, animals, or body parts. And some lessons within pathways can be skipped or completed in any order!

Cultural Insights

Since language and culture are deeply connected, Innovative Language intentionally incorporates cultural notes into its lessons, along with personal stories.

Suppose the lesson is about meeting new people. The hosts offer a brief guide on the "dos and don'ts" between strangers in that culture, such as the cultural norms when meeting a partner's family in Italy.

So you receive extra value! Culture is skillfully integrated into your lesson, leaving you with a deeper appreciation for the language.

Disadvantages of Innovative Language

Lessons Require Better Structuring

I mentioned that there is a lot of course material to get through, right? Well, this has a downside.

Due to the sheer amount of content, you might feel unsure about where to begin or what to do next. The abundance of choices can be overwhelming, similar to the "Netflix Effect," where you spend more time looking through options than actually watching something.

For example, in the Spanish program, you'll find lessons that focus on aspects of Peruvian Spanish, Puerto Rican Spanish, Mexican Spanish, and European Spanish. Do you want to study all of them, or just one? And if just one, which one?

The lessons would benefit from a more intuitive structure so that subscribers can more easily decide what to study next.

Dashboard Design Could Be More Engaging

I have no issue with the mobile app—I think it's reasonably well-organized and designed. The problem is with the web version.

The dashboard is the first screen a student sees, so it's important for it to be visually attractive. Unfortunately, nothing captures attention and the overall appearance is somewhat bland.

If a student is expected to spend many hours studying content, it would be more encouraging if the web interface had a more creative and inspiring design. This significantly influences motivation and involvement.

Uneven Quality Among Languages

To be fair, this is a challenge for many language learning programs, but it must be noted: learning some languages with Innovative Language is a better experience than learning others.

The software performs relatively well with many common European languages, but it's inconsistent with less commonly taught languages. For instance, there is significant potential for enhancement in their Vietnamese and Arabic courses.

In my view, Innovative Language depends too heavily on audio material and podcasts.

Don't misunderstand, the listening content is valuable. But the language learning software could be enhanced with more video content. Innovative Language does include some videos, but these are often tutorial-style, as if the learner is in a lecture.

Video engages multiple areas of the brain, making the content more lively and memorable. Besides, I'm not referring to just any video: Innovative Language could make use of authentic native content to support their communicative learning method.

If you are concentrating on a single language and you like lessons based on dialogues, then Innovative Language is worth the cost.

The sheer amount of content from Innovative Language alone provides good value for money. Even if you complete one lesson daily, you will never exhaust the material. Unlike free online lessons, their lesson notes and transcripts are also of very high quality.

It also addresses a wide variety of topics, so it's unlikely you will lose interest.

However, for those seeking a more organized learning sequence, Innovative Language might not be the ideal choice. You might consider Pimsleur, which provides structured audio lessons that you follow daily in a specific order.

There is also Coffee Break Languages for similar podcast-style lessons but with a more relaxed atmosphere.

In summary, remember this: No matter which language program you choose, your results depend on your effort.

There are no quick paths to achieving fluency in a language. You must complete all the necessary work. And as the saying goes… “Don’t skip leg day!”
