Beelinguapp Review: A Great Reading-focused Learning Tool, Though Challenging for New Learners

Beelinguapp is a language application that uses bilingual texts to help you engage with authentic media in the language you're learning, minimizing the need to constantly stop and look up words.

I found it to be an excellent tool for avid readers and those who prefer a more natural language acquisition method, but it's certainly not the best choice for absolute beginners.

I explored the application thoroughly to identify its strengths and potential areas for improvement.

Beelinguapp's goal is to make learning a new language as straightforward as reading a favorite book—a very attractive proposition for book lovers!

The application proudly states it was "designed in Berlin" by David Montiel. It launched in 2016 after Montiel noticed he spent excessive time looking up unfamiliar words while reading German texts and listening to audiobooks. He created Beelinguapp to eliminate this step by providing translations directly within the app, saving time and making authentic texts more approachable.

Beelinguapp features hundreds of texts across 14 languages with side-by-side translations. By immersing users in real-world language, the app helps them absorb vocabulary and grammar intuitively, without formal lessons.

A Closer Look at Beelinguapp Features

App-based offline learning

The first thing I observed on the website is that Beelinguapp cannot be used in a web browser. As the name implies, it is exclusively an application. This could be a drawback if you prefer syncing your progress across devices—a common feature in many modern learning platforms.

Conversely, Beelinguapp provides a feature many current apps lack: offline access. Opening a text also downloads it, allowing you to access it later in your "Favorites" section without an internet connection. This enables you to use the app while traveling. As someone who commutes frequently in areas with poor cell service, I found this feature very practical!

Easily switch between languages

Beelinguapp offers 14 languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, German, Japanese, Russian, Chinese, Hindi, Turkish, Korean, Arabic and Swedish. Unlike many programs that require a separate subscription for each language, Beelinguapp lets you switch between them effortlessly.

Additionally, you can select which language you learn from, so you are not restricted to using English as the base. This is ideal if your native language isn't English, or if you are learning two languages simultaneously.

Huge variety of content

Upon opening the app, it asked me a few personal questions. This helped it suggest appropriate texts and genres, determine my proficiency level, and set a weekly learning target.

Once inside, I was greeted by an almost overwhelming amount of content. The selection of short texts is enormous! In my initial browse, I found texts on the development of color TV, a summary of "Around the World in 80 Days," an informative piece about raccoons, a biography of style icon Iris Apfel, and a short story about a family celebrating Kwanzaa… and that's just a small sample of the available content.

Besides short stories and educational articles, Beelinguapp also includes news stories and songs.

There are also "challenges" that provide information about various countries and cultures. While you can read most texts in any order, these challenges follow a specific sequence, and you must complete one to unlock the next.

This extensive content appears to be available in all languages—I switched languages a few times to verify, and the recommended texts remained consistent. This is significant because language apps often have more content for popular languages. Fortunately, that is not an issue here.

Language learning through bilingual text

The primary learning method on Beelinguapp is reading. Every text is displayed in your target language alongside a translation in your base language.

Besides helping you follow the text, Beelinguapp is designed to facilitate natural vocabulary acquisition. Before you start reading, you are shown key vocabulary from the text. These words are automatically added to your personal word list unless you deselect them.

The app's interface is clean, with large, easy-to-read text and no distractions in reading mode. As you read, you can highlight words to see their definitions and add them to your vocabulary for later flashcard review.

You can toggle between the dual-language view and a view with only your target language. You can enable the translation when the text is difficult or disable it if you find yourself relying too heavily on the English version.

Beelinguapp also includes a speaking feature: you can press and hold a sentence to practice saying it. However, despite trying this in multiple languages and texts, I could not get it to work.

Slow native audio reading

In addition to bilingual text, every story includes an audio narration. As the narrator speaks, the corresponding words are highlighted in both languages, making it simple to follow along.

The Russian and Japanese narrations I listened to sounded authentic—it appears Beelinguapp uses native speakers for its audio, which enhances the authenticity.

The audio offers several playback speeds, allowing you to slow it down to .5 or .75 of the normal speed. There is no option to speed it up, and I found the standard speed somewhat slow. The slow, clear reading is helpful for following along, but it never reaches a natural, native pace. This seems like a missed chance to support more advanced learners who wish to continue using the app.

Controls don’t always work correctly

Although the app's interface is clean and easy to use, I encountered a few problems during my exploration.

The main issue was with the text lookup feature. The app allows you to check the meaning of individual words for more detail and add them to your vocabulary list. However, it wasn't immediately clear how to activate this feature, and once I figured it out (a long-press), it wasn't very responsive.

This might be a problem specific to my phone, but the app didn't seem to fully override Android's built-in text selection, causing both systems to activate and creating confusion. And sometimes, the long-press did nothing at all.

Other control issues included the back button not always functioning and an inability to adjust the volume within the app. As mentioned, the speaking feature also didn't work for me, and I received an error when trying to remove a word from my vocabulary list.

Overall, these are minor annoyances, but they can accumulate and detract from an otherwise excellent experience. If you are sensitive to software bugs, you might find them irritating, but I felt they were minor compared to the overall quality of the program.

Review games check your comprehension

Vocabulary learning extends beyond the reading sections. Beelinguapp also includes review tests that assess both reading comprehension and understanding of key terms.

Each story is followed by a series of games that test vocabulary knowledge, pronunciation, and listening skills. You can also review your flashcards from that story after finishing the text.

The vocabulary game shows a sentence from your reading with one word missing, and you must select the correct word from multiple choices. The pronunciation game plays a sentence and asks you to repeat it for comparison. Finally, the listening game plays a sentence with a missing word, and you type the missing word as you hear it.

If you're stuck, you don't have to guess—you can simply view the answer to any question.

I found the listening game the most enjoyable and effective. However, I noticed the audio in the games sounds more synthetic than the main story narration. This might be intentional—removing intonation can make speech easier to understand—and generally, it isn't noticeable enough to be disruptive.

Limited by your ability to read and write in your target language

I study Japanese primarily for spoken communication, so I focus more on listening and speaking than reading and writing. This highlights a common limitation with many language apps: if you cannot read your target language, you cannot use the program.

Unfortunately, this applies to Beelinguapp. While I greatly enjoyed using the program, I was frustrated by the lack of support for the reading process itself. I wish there was an option to display phonetic transcriptions in English for all languages, or at least to hear the audio for every question in the review games.

I quickly realized the vocabulary review was ineffective for me because it lacked accompanying audio, which I relied on for the text readings.

The vocabulary quiz also doesn't provide translations for the questions or answers after you've selected the correct one, making it possible to guess correctly without understanding the meaning. I completed a Russian vocabulary quiz (which I can read) and selected the right answer by eliminating wrong choices, but I still didn't learn the meaning of the word I chose.

The ability to type in your target language is also necessary for the listening game. Since the program is app-based, this is less problematic as you can easily install a language keyboard. Still, it's important to know beforehand that you'll need to be able to type in your target language.

Free vs. Pro: Is Bilinguapp Pro Worth It?

Beelinguapp offers a limited selection of free texts and flashcards. You can certainly use the free content for a while, but to access the full library, a paid subscription is required.

Without a subscription, you cannot change your target or base language, and the free content includes advertisements.

The Bilinguapp Pro subscription offers excellent value for money, especially if you pay for a full year upfront. A subscription costs $6.99 per month, or $3.75 per month with an annual plan. The annual plan also includes a free seven-day trial (which I canceled without any issues before being charged).

You can also manage your subscription directly through the iOS and Google Play stores, which is very convenient.

Given the vast amount of content available, if you enjoy the free offerings, I believe Beelinguapp Pro is definitely worth the investment.

Alternatives to Beelinguapp

The concept of learning from side-by-side bilingual texts isn't unique to Beelinguapp. If the instant word lookup feature appeals to you, consider these other programs and apps similar to Beelinguapp:

• Graded readers: Numerous books offer side-by-side text in English and your target language. While printed books don't allow you to hide translations or hear audio narrations easily, graded readers are a great option if you enjoy learning through reading. They are also useful if your language isn't available on Bilinguapp or if you prefer working with longer texts.
• Lingflix: The Lingflix program provides thousands of videos in 10 languages, all featuring bilingual subtitles and transcripts. It allows you to quickly check word meanings with its contextual, video-enhanced dictionary integrated into every video. You can save vocabulary words, study them with quizzes, and find other videos that use the words you're learning. Lingflix also caters to learners from beginner to advanced levels. This is an excellent choice if you want more context or a visual component in your learning.
• LingQ: This is another platform that uses bilingual texts for language learning. I've tried LingQ and found it less intuitive than Beelinguapp, but it has a valuable feature: it allows you to upload almost any text, audio, or video for study. Consider this option if you want to learn using your own materials in your target language.

Beelinguapp is a wonderful language-learning resource, especially for book lovers. This review should provide all the information you need to decide if this program is right for you!
